Outboard Tiller

The tiller is attached to the front of the power head to help steer the boat. A mounting bracket (often like C-clamps) attaches the (removable) outboard motor to the stern of the boat. As one looks down the outboard motor, the anti-ventilation plate extends over the bottom propeller, which essentially spins like a fan to make the boat move forward (and sometimes backward). The skeg at the bottom of the outboard engine both protects the propeller and supports the rudder. Today’s outboard motor design mimics that of Mr. Evinrude’s 1907 model insofar as using a vertical crankshaft, bevel gears and horizontal flywheels. The design is timeless, handy and, above all, efficient.
