Proper ventilation on a gas tank for an outboard boat motor?

Saturday, July 10th, 2010
doodlebug asked:

My husband and I are having trouble with our outboard boat motor. The motor runs, but when in full throttle the boat will only go about 2 mph. We did notice that the vents on the 6 gallon gas tank were not opened. Could the closed vents cause the boat to only go 2mph? Also, how much ventilation is needed for a 6 gallon tank? If this isn't the problem, what else could it be? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
the motor is not revving up....
Okay....now my husband says that the motor is revving, but still only going 2mph. Sorry.
I'm not sure what year the motor is. (its older) Its a Mercury 65 hp Direct 3 Charge. The motor runs like gas is getting to it. It just won't go. When gas tank is almost empty, the motor runs very well....gets the most power.
Propeller is turning just fine.

I have a 70 horse Johnson outboard motor. Like I said when trolling it stalls, but when running to shore or our fishing spot, it is fine. What could be the problem? It also wasn't pumping water, fixed the water pump. Now it is fine. Could that of influenced the problem?

What should I do to get my Mercury outboard motor starting better?

lil' Steph asked:

I bought a 1978 Avenger 3 years ago, it has a 1990's Mercury outboard 200hp (two stroke) and took it to a shop to do a tune up. They said the transom was rotting and they wouldn't do the tune up without replacing the transom ($3K). I took the boat back and didn't follow recommendations, as i hear the wood solid when i knock and no signs of rot at all! Three summers of fun and finally getting around to the tune up. I changed the spark plugs and fuel oil seperator. Now the boat wont start. I have spark and the starter works not sure what to do????Help?? we've used a lot of starter fluid spray into the I don't know what worked in past now not helping?????

I have a 2001 mercury 90 horse 2 stroke outboard motor. How much money would it take to rebuild?

martinez.72819 asked:

The motor still runs good. It uses more gas and oil now cause of it's age. I've noticed that it doesn't have the power it use to have. Sometime in the near future I'd like to get the motor rebuilt. What would be my best call on getting more life out of my engine. Complete overhaul or what? The engine has really been a good one and I'd like to keep it.

Why won’t the key ignition switch start my outboard motor?

Monday, April 5th, 2010
Trent asked:

The outboard fires up with the pull cord start but not with the key ignition switch. I have been told it's probably either the fuse, the solenoid, or the ignition switch itself. I replaced the fuse (which was in a wire harness that looks like a pill) so that shouldn't be the problem. I'm not sure how to check (or find) the solenoid, and am not sure how to check the ignition switch, or the 8 wires that come out of it. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. (The outboard is a early 80s Mariner)
